Footing the Bill: Why Those Who Never Lost Power During Hurricane Irma Will Wish They Did

Why your power bill is set to skyrocket

Hurricane Irma was the strongest Atlantic basin hurricane ever recorded. The storm wreaked havoc in Florida before making its way through the Southeast, affecting the lives of millions of Americans and leaving many without electricity. While the storm was a short-term headache for millions of Floridians that lost electricity from the storm, it is about to become a long-term nightmare for those that didn’t.

According to a recent act passed by the Trump administration, the Electric Company Infrastructure Improvement Financing Amendment Act of 2017, Floridians that did not lose power during Hurricane Irma will see up to a 500% increase in electricity bills for six months to recoup lost revenue for American-owned business who were without power as a result of the storm

The Kumquat has taken a deep dive into the most recent money grab by the Trump administration and discovered that Chapter 32 Subsection 1528 Paragraph B of the Electric Company Infrastructure Improvement Financing Amendment Act of 2017 states “Any disruption in the electric consumption of Americans due to, but not limited to, natural disaster, war, the hoax known as global warming, and infestation of illegal immigrants, etc. shall be dealt with swiftly and tremendously. Those affected most, and obviously I’m talking about American-owned business here, will receive a tremendous tax credit paid for by those who had power. If you looked into it you would probably find it was their fault anyways.”

This is yet another shocking display of authoritarianism displayed by the president. When asked to comment, Dade City official Walter Perryman said “Ah hell I knew all about that act. I keep up with the Electric Company Infrastructure Improvement Financing Amendment Act every year. Why do you think I cut my power off two days before the storm?”
